Age-related Chronic Inflammation in Frailty and Sarcopenia
Roh Eun

Abstract
Frailty is a hallmark of aging. Sarcopenia is defined by low muscle strength, low muscle quantity/quality and low physical performance as an indicator of severity. Sarcopenia is common in older adults and considered as the physical manifestation of frailty. With various causes and complex pathways proposed, the pathophysiologic causes for both syndromes have been incompletely described. Growing evidence has suggested that age-related changes in the immune system contribute to frailty and sarcopenia via their role in the chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, which is called inflammaging, and neutrophil dysfunction. In this review, I addressed the concepts, measurements and diagnostic criteria of frailty and sarcopenia. I also discussed age-associated chronic inflammation as a potential contributor to frailty and sarcopenia focusing on proinflammatory cytokines and aberrant neutrophil migration.
